Like many thousands of locations around the UK and the world, we had a street party in Frith Street yesterday after the wedding ceremony. Much fun was had by patrons and staff, and it was nice to see people from different walks of life and backgrounds enjoying themselves. Until the next one…Salut!
Royal weddings do not come around every day of the week, and as ever there is interest from around the world for the big day on the 29th of April. People are camping out for the best spot in the streets of the capital and film crews are buzzing all over London trying to get the latest story in the build up to it all. We are Bar Italia and Little Italy are getting into the spirit of things and have be-decked both places in flags and bunting. We are open as normal on Friday, so if you haven’t been invited to the wedding reception and find yourself in Soho, why not pop in and enjoy the best coffee in town or enjoy a meal in convivial surroundings. We look forward to seeing you, and all the very best to Prince William and Kate Middleton.
With a royal wedding this week, London is fuller than usual with tourists from all over the World, all looking for places to visit and advice on where to eat, drink and sleep whilst they wait for the big day on Friday. We would suggest they pop into Bar Italia to pick up a free copy of the Winter 2010/2011 ‘City Guide To London’ pocket book, which is full of interesting information on where to do all of the above, plus much much more. We at Bar Italia are delighted to be featured within its pages along with our sister restaurant Little Italy. Just to confirm the guides are free and our staff will gladly help you pick up a copy on your visit.
We’ve been having some lovely weather in old London town for the past week or so, and this led to a discussion on Thursday on the Robert Elms show on BBC London, as to the best place in London to rest up and watch the world go by. Robert himself plonked for outside Bar Italia. ‘It’s old school with wonderful coffee, and all’s right with world sitting there on a sunny day’. As ever, Mr Elms, we admire your taste.
Good to see Louie Spence in Bar Italia the other night. Anyone who saw him on the Sky TV programme ‘Pineapple Dance Studios’ a couple of year’s back would have known he was going to become a celebrity, he was perfect for the job. He was once a principal dancer in West End shows like ‘Cats’ and ‘Miss Saigon’ and went on to tour with Take That and The Spice Girls. He now has his own show on Sky called ‘Louie Spence’s Showbusiness’
He’s a familiar face to many of you who frequent the Soho area. For sure, he’s the best dressed on a daily basis. Once seen he’s rarely forgotten, and he’s real charmer to boot. Yes, it’s the one and only, Mark Powell. Mark is the Bespoke tailor to everyone from George Clooney to Mick Jagger. Mr Powell can be seen daily at Bar Italia and he is also featured in the current edition of L’Uomo Vogue where he can also be seen making suits for the singer Paul Weller. www.markpowellbespoke.co.uk
A regular visitor to Bar Italia for a large cappuccino over the past week has been the one and only Georgie Fame. Mr Fame and his band The Blue Flames, have been playing sold out night’s at Ronnie Scotts club which is of course just over the road from us. From the reports we have heard, he and the band have been on fire . Catch him whilst you can, ends Saturday 16th.
We welcomed TV presenter Melvyn Bragg and a BBC film crew to the Bar this week. They were filming for a BBC2 series titled ‘The Reel History of Britain’, which will use archive film footage to look at how the UK has changed over the last hundred years. One episode will look at the coffee bar culture in the Soho of the 1950s, and obviously they thought of us when looking for a location to film in, as we have retained the authentic feel and look of that era within Bar Italia. We’re very pleased to report that Melvyn appeared to enjoy his cappucino…
Bar Italia found itself featured in The Sunday Times recently, when a photograph of Fawn Raymond and our famous clock appeared in a feature story concerning the fascinating life and times of ‘Soho Porn King’ Paul Raymond and specifically his property empire, Soho Estates. Raymond died in 2008, leaving a portfolio valued at £370. Fawn is a granddaughter of Paul and aged 25 is now a very wealthy young lady. Here’s a link to a similar story in 2009 http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/specials/rich_list/rich_list_2009/article6163997.ece
We make no excuse of running this photo once again. Of all the celebrities we see in Bar Italia, no one got the waitresses as excited as actor Jonathan Rhys Meyers did when he visited the Bar recently. Catch Jonathan in ‘The Tudors’ on BBC2
When this hearse arrived outside Bar Italia this week, followed by a gaggle of papparazi photographers, we took one look at the flower arrangement inside and wondered what was about to happen? It turned out to be a publicity stunt, but we’re still waiting to find out what for!
If you know, please get in touch and let us know
